Marine Le Pen Loses Councilor Position After Embezzlement Conviction
A decree confirming her removal was issued earlier this week, shortly after authorities received the official court ruling, as reported by media source.
On March 31, Le Pen was sentenced to five years of ineligibility, four years in prison (with two years to be served under electronic surveillance), and a €100,000 fine.
Although she has been removed from her position, Le Pen retains the option to appeal the decision in an administrative court, which could lead to a temporary suspension of the decree while the appeal is considered. However, the Lille administrative court has stated that it has "not registered any request from Marine Le Pen to date."
Le Pen was found guilty by the Paris Criminal Court for her involvement in an embezzlement scheme that misappropriated European Parliament funds to compensate National Rally staff from 2004 to 2016. The total amount embezzled is estimated at €4.4 million, with €1.1 million reportedly returned.
