RSF Artillery Shelling in Sudan Kills Seven, Injures 3

(MENAFN) On Sunday, seven civilians lost their lives and three others sustained injuries due to artillery fire from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, as reported by the Sudanese army.

A military statement emphasized that displaced individuals in the Zamzam refugee camp and other regions in Darfur are facing "inhumane and discriminatory treatment" from RSF forces, which includes road blockades and property theft.

The RSF has not yet addressed the army's accusations.

According to Sudanese authorities, artillery bombardments by the RSF have persisted for several days in El-Fasher, leading to numerous casualties. The city has been embroiled in intense confrontations between the Sudanese army and the RSF since May 2024, despite ongoing international warnings regarding the risks of conflict in El-Fasher, a vital center for humanitarian assistance in Darfur.

Earlier this week, the RSF asserted that it had seized control of the Zamzam refugee camp following skirmishes with army troops. United Nations statistics reveal that at least 400 civilians have died and nearly 400,000 have been displaced due to the violence.

Since the onset of the RSF's conflict with the Sudanese army on April 15, 2023, the fighting has led to thousands of fatalities and has contributed to one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally. The UN and local authorities report over 20,000 deaths and 15 million displaced individuals, while US scholars estimate the death toll to be around 130,000.
