Jeepney Crash Kills Six, Injures 20 in Philippines

(MENAFN) A jeepney lost its brakes and crashed into a roadside canal in Marinduque province, killing six people and injuring 20 others, authorities reported Sunday.

The jeepney, which was carrying 26 holidaymakers, was on its way to a river for a family outing when the incident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Saturday.

According to police, the jeepney was descending a road when its brakes failed. The vehicle then collided with cement culverts and struck a tree before falling into a canal, throwing several passengers onto the ground.

The crash severely damaged the jeepney, with the roof torn off and the hood destroyed.

Jeepneys remain a vital mode of transportation for millions of Filipinos, particularly in rural areas.
