New Delhi examines its very first underwater robot
(MENAFN) India has successfully tested its first High-Endurance Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (HEAUV), developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) based in Visakhapatnam. The HEAUV underwent trials in a lake, showcasing its ability to operate in both surface and submerged conditions. The specific testing location was not disclosed.
The unmanned underwater vehicle, which varies in size from a few hundred to several thousand pounds, can glide from the ocean’s surface to its depths and perform hovering and stopping maneuvers similar to blimps or helicopters. Designed for long-duration operations, the HEAUV can operate without frequently needing to resurface or recharge, making it ideal for missions such as ocean floor mapping, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and oceanographic research.
Equipped with advanced anti-submarine warfare sensors, the HEAUV can detect and track submarines, strengthening India’s naval capabilities. Its development aligns with India’s push for greater self-reliance in defense technology, supporting initiatives like the ‘Make in India’ program, which encourages the domestic production of key defense items.
