Amnesty International Presses German President to Halt Netanyahu Meeting
Katja Muller-Fahlbusch, a Middle East specialist at Amnesty International's German branch, stated to a news agency, “Steinmeier’s visit is definitely not appropriate,” adding, "His planned meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sends a fatal message … of German complicity in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza."
This request follows Steinmeier's reception of Israeli President Isaac Herzog at Bellevue Palace in Berlin, where military honors were bestowed to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Germany and Israel. Steinmeier's itinerary includes traveling to Israel with Herzog, where he is set to meet with Netanyahu and address the Knesset.
Amnesty International's German branch has initiated a letter-writing campaign, encouraging citizens to petition Steinmeier to cancel the Netanyahu meeting. “Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC). There is an arrest warrant,” Muller-Fahlbusch emphasized, referencing the ICC warrants issued in November 2024 concerning war crimes in Gaza. The organization highlights the significant Palestinian casualties in Gaza, stating that nearly 53,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s ongoing assault.
