Vance declares ‘era of uncontested US dominance over’

(MENAFN) US Vice President J.D. Vance declared on Friday that the era of Washington’s uncontested global dominance has ended, citing increasing challenges from Russia, China, and other nations. Speaking to Naval Academy graduates in Annapolis, Maryland, Vance reflected on how US leaders once believed that “American primacy” was guaranteed after the Cold War and that no foreign power could rival the United States.

He noted that during the post-Cold War period, America held near-total control over the air, sea, space, and cyberspace domains. However, Vance warned that the global landscape has drastically changed. The US now faces serious competition from China, Russia, and others who aim to outmatch the US in areas ranging from communications infrastructure and supply chains to low Earth orbit and the electromagnetic spectrum.

Vance criticized the post-Cold War US foreign policy for overly focusing on “soft power” and intervening in foreign conflicts unrelated to core American interests. He emphasized that the Trump administration intends to end this approach, shifting away from vague missions and prolonged conflicts.

Trump has expressed intentions to help resolve the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and the conflict in Ukraine, both of which the US has heavily supported militarily. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made the relocation of Gaza’s Palestinians a condition for peace, while Trump has suggested plans to rebuild Gaza as a resort post-conflict.

In Ukraine, the US is pursuing a diplomatic solution while gradually reducing military aid. Trump has also sought to recover aid funds through a mineral exploitation deal with Ukraine but stopped short of providing formal security guarantees to Kiev.
