Lebanon Holds Final Round of Local Elections

(MENAFN) The concluding stage of Lebanon’s municipal voting began Saturday across the southern regions, taking place against a backdrop of persistent Israeli airstrikes and breaches of a ceasefire.

This event represents the nation’s first round of local elections in almost ten years.

The last elections were conducted in 2016, but subsequent rounds were delayed on three separate occasions due to ongoing political instability and safety concerns.

According to a state-operated Lebanese news agency, voting stations opened their doors at 7 a.m. local time (0400GMT) and will remain open until 7 p.m. (1600GMT), after which the ballot counting will commence.

The elections follow intense bombardments by Israeli jets and unmanned aircraft on Friday, which constituted a violation of the existing truce.

Lebanese Premier Nawaf Salam denounced the aggression, stating that the assaults took place at a "critical time" just before the vote in the southern districts.
