Putin Understands Trump in English
(MENAFN) Russian Leader Vladimir Putin is capable of comprehending English when speaking directly with U.S. Leader Donald Trump, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
He revealed that although Putin listens to Trump in English during their direct conversations, a Russian interpretation is provided afterward to reduce any chance of misunderstanding.
During an interview aired on Sunday, Peskov discussed several “technical nuances” involved in both recent and earlier phone calls between the two leaders. He stated that Putin’s command of English is sufficient to grasp the essence of their discussions without immediately needing an interpreter.
“The president first hears the voice of his counterpart – that is, he hears Trump’s voice – and then the interpreter translates it,” Peskov clarified.
He emphasized that Putin can follow what is being said before the translation occurs. “As you know, the president understands English himself, so he can immediately process some of the information,” he added.
However, Peskov acknowledged that the interpretation process tends to prolong the conversation due to the alternating nature of dialogue.
On May 19, the two heads of state engaged in a discussion lasting over two hours, which the Kremlin characterized as “very useful.”
This call came shortly after face-to-face negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul—the first direct diplomatic engagement since 2022, when Kiev pulled out of a draft peace agreement.
The most recent round of dialogue yielded a proposal for what could become the largest prisoner swap between the two countries to date.
