UN Chief Cautions Against Rising Tensions
“I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security,” Guterres posted on X, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
His statement came after US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out "very successful" aerial assaults on three of Iran's nuclear facilities, amid increasing fears of a broader regional conflict.
Guterres urged all member nations to ease tensions and to adhere to their duties under the UN Charter as well as international legal standards.
He warned, “There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.”
He further stressed that military action is not a viable solution, advocating instead for diplomatic engagement.
“The only hope is peace,” Guterres concluded, underlining the necessity of negotiations over violence.
