Trump states Putin is seeking end of Ukraine’s war
Trump made the remarks following a White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was invited to Washington after Trump’s summit with Putin in Alaska last week.
The U.S. leader described his Anchorage talks with Putin as “good” and focused on halting the fighting between Moscow and Kiev. “And I think there is a possibility that something could come out of it,” he added.
Trump also proposed that a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky could be arranged soon, suggesting that “there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that.”
“I know the president. I know myself, and I believe Vladimir Putin wants to see it [the conflict] ended,” he claimed. Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is also ready for such a trilateral discussion, adding, “It is a good signal about trilateral. I think this is very good.”
Trump called Putin on Monday to update him on progress with Zelensky and Western European leaders who had traveled to Washington to show support. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov later confirmed that the call lasted 40 minutes, during which both leaders expressed readiness to discuss a resolution to the Ukraine conflict with Zelensky.
Following the Alaska summit, Putin remarked that the meeting brings “us closer” to peace, while reiterating that addressing the root causes of the crisis is essential for any settlement.
