Typhoon Ragasa Causes Destruction Across Asia
(MENAFN) At least 14 individuals lost their lives and over 120 remain unaccounted for after Typhoon Ragasa unleashed severe flooding in Taiwan, according to media accounts on Wednesday.
The torrential rains on Tuesday led to the overflow of the Matai’an Creek Barrier Lake, sending surges of water into Guangfu Township in Hualien County.
Streets were submerged to nearly a full story high, with vehicles swept away, a news agency reported. Portions of the Matai’an River Bridge were also destroyed.
Rescue operations are ongoing as teams attempt to find 124 people still missing, while 18 others sustained injuries.
Officials relocated more than 3,000 residents from Guangfu, Fenglin, and Wanrong townships to secure shelters.
Emergency responders cautioned that the death toll may increase as assessments progress and those still unaccounted for remain missing.
In the Philippines, authorities confirmed two additional fatalities and six missing individuals due to Super Typhoon Ragasa, bringing the total number of deaths in the country’s north to three.
Meanwhile, in China, officials moved over 1 million residents to safer areas after Guangdong province raised its typhoon emergency alert to the maximum level.
Landfall of Super Typhoon Ragasa was expected along the central or western shoreline on Wednesday, according to state-operated media.
