Tensions rise as China, Japan clash over Diaoyu patrols

(MENAFN) China and Japan exchanged sharp statements after Chinese Coast Guard ships patrolled waters near the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islets.

On Sunday, four Chinese vessels entered the surrounding waters, prompting Japan to issue a protest to Beijing on Monday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru said Tokyo lodged a “stern protest” through diplomatic channels, calling the patrols a violation of international law and demanding the vessels leave.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Tuesday that Beijing’s actions are “legitimate, lawful and fully justified.”

“Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands have always been China’s territory. The patrols and law enforcement of China Coast Guard vessels in China’s territorial waters are legitimate, lawful and fully justified,” Mao said at a news conference in Beijing.

She added that China does not accept the “groundless protest of the Japanese side” and lodged a counter-protest, urging Japan to “respect China’s territorial sovereignty.”

The tensions follow remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on potential Chinese military action against Taiwan, which triggered a backlash from Beijing. Amid the situation, Japanese Foreign Ministry official Masaaki Kanai met his Chinese counterpart Liu Jinsong in Beijing on Tuesday.
