India Secures Major US LPG Supply Deal
This arrangement emerges as pressure intensifies from the administration of US President Donald Trump, urging New Delhi to reduce its trade imbalance with Washington and halt its acquisition of oil from Russia.
According to Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, “Indian PSU [public sector undertaking] oil companies have successfully concluded a 1-year deal for imports of around 2.2 MTPA LPG,” as stated in a message shared on X.
These shipments will represent nearly a tenth of India’s yearly LPG purchases, he noted. India currently brings in approximately 20–21 million tons of LPG each year.
In addition, the US has enforced a reciprocal tariff structure of 50% on Indian products, which includes a 25% duty applied to imports originating from Russia.
Despite these conditions, India continued to be the second-largest consumer of Russian crude oil in October.
New Delhi has repeatedly rejected criticism regarding its procurement of Russian oil, asserting that its energy strategy is rooted in “national interest,” even as it broadens its commercial ties with the United States.
