China halts Japanese seafood imports amid Taiwan tensions
Beijing has notified Tokyo of the suspension, according to government sources cited by Kyodo News. The move comes just days after Japanese Farm Minister Norikazu Suzuki announced the resumption of seafood exports to China for the first time since Beijing’s 2023 ban over treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
China had partially lifted the ban in June after Japan pledged to ensure the safety and quality of exports, but restrictions remain on seafood from 10 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, including Fukushima.
Tensions escalated after Takaichi said on Nov. 7 that any Chinese military action against Taiwan, including a naval blockade, could qualify as a "survival-threatening situation," allowing Japan to exercise its right to collective self-defense. Beijing condemned the remarks and demanded a retraction.
Afterward, Chinese Consul General in Osaka Xue Jian posted on social media that he would "cut a dirty neck without a moment of hesitation," prompting a protest from Tokyo. China also advised its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan, while Japan’s government emphasized it remains "open to all kinds of dialogue" with Beijing. Japanese officials in Beijing rejected the travel alert, saying the public safety situation in Japan “is not deteriorating,” and the embassy advised nationals in China to take precautions.
Separately, China said Premier Li Qiang will not meet with Takaichi on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in South Africa this weekend.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Security Council reform, Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong said Japan "is totally unqualified" to seek a permanent seat. He criticized Takaichi's Taiwan remarks as "extremely erroneous and dangerous," saying they undermine international justice, violate the post-war international order, and contradict Japan’s commitment to peaceful development.
