Japan PM Doubles Down Calls for China Talks
Addressing bilateral friction and mutual apprehensions requires open channels of communication, Takaichi emphasized while outlining her administration's policy roadmap for the year ahead during the press event.
"Our nation is open to various opportunities for dialogue with China and has never closed the door," she stated, as reported by a Japanese news agency.
The push for talks follows a weekend advisory from Beijing's diplomatic mission in Tokyo warning Chinese nationals about safety concerns. China's Embassy in Japan issued a Saturday bulletin claiming security circumstances had worsened in certain Japanese areas, recommending citizens postpone visits to the country for now.
Japanese officials have yet to issue any formal reaction to the embassy's recent advisory.
The diplomatic standoff intensified following Takaichi's Nov. 7 declaration last year, when she characterized a potential Chinese military action against Taiwan as something that "could legally constitute a 'survival-threatening situation,'" which might enable Japan to invoke collective self-defense protocols.
Beijing responded furiously to those comments, rolling out punitive actions including the travel advisory, reinstating restrictions on Japanese seafood shipments, and implementing additional retaliatory policies.
