Japan Rebukes Chinese Restrictions on Dual-Use Exports

(MENAFN) Japan delivered a sharp rebuke Wednesday following China's unprecedented embargo on dual-use exports to Japanese recipients, with Tokyo denouncing the restrictions as fundamentally illegitimate, domestic media outlets confirmed.

Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara expressed confusion over the sweeping measures, stating the parameters and objectives behind China's embargo remain "largely unclear," media reported.

Kihara declined to speculate on ramifications for Japan's industrial sectors but emphasized the trade restrictions "only target Japan," characterizing them as actions that "deviate significantly from international practice" and are "absolutely unacceptable."

Beijing rolled out the prohibition Tuesday, blocking shipments of dual-use goods to Japanese recipients for defense-related applications and other purposes China deems as bolstering Japan's armed forces.

China's Commerce Ministry declared in an official announcement that exports of any dual-use materials to Japanese military recipients, for defense purposes, or for applications that could "enhance Japan's military strength" face immediate prohibition.

The embargo threatens key sectors encompassing drone manufacturing, cutting-edge technological components, and critical rare earth supplies.

Diplomatic friction between Beijing and Tokyo has intensified dramatically since November, when Japanese legislator Sanae Takaichi characterized a potential Chinese military operation against Taiwan as possibly representing a "survival-threatening situation," which could trigger Japan's collective self-defense protocols under constitutional interpretation.

Beijing responded furiously to her statement, issuing travel advisories warning Chinese nationals about visiting Japan and reimposing a comprehensive ban on Japanese seafood products alongside additional punitive measures.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated China's demands Wednesday, pressing Tokyo to withdraw Takaichi's remarks and "correct its wrongdoing."
