Lebanon Says Israel Wants to Annex Areas in Southern Region
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam made the comments during a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday, in the context of ongoing Israeli statements and attacks in southern Lebanon.
Salam referred to repeated threats from the Israeli defense minister regarding plans to occupy territories south of the Litani River, as well as remarks from the Israeli finance minister about annexing the area.
He added that Israel had destroyed most of the bridges over the Litani River, which he described as an effort to isolate the region from the rest of Lebanon.
Salam also highlighted widespread displacement of residents from towns and villages south of the river, alongside daily encroachments, home demolitions, and in some cases, the complete leveling of houses.
He cautioned that these measures suggest that civilians may not be able to return to their homes in the near future.
