UK, France to Lead Multinational Martial Planning on Strait of Hormuz Security
The two-day meeting is scheduled to begin Wednesday at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, northwest London. Officials say the discussions are intended to convert recent diplomatic understandings into an operational military framework that could be activated once conditions permit, following a sustained ceasefire.
Military planners participating in the conference are expected to focus on operational readiness, command-and-control structures, and potential deployment mechanisms for forces in the region.
The initiative comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route. According to reports, Tehran imposed navigation restrictions in the area on March 2, shortly after joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.
Diplomatic efforts have continued in parallel. Pakistan hosted talks between US and Iranian representatives on April 11–12 following its role in brokering a 14-day ceasefire agreement on April 8, which was originally due to expire Wednesday evening (Washington time).
US President Donald Trump later announced that the ceasefire would be extended, citing a request from Pakistani officials and stating that the extension would allow Iran time to prepare what he called a “unified proposal.”
Despite ongoing negotiations and the ceasefire extension, uncertainty remains over the next phase of talks and the long-term stability of maritime security arrangements in the region.
