China Issues Flood Emergency Alert as Heavy Rains Threaten Six Regions
According to a government statement, the emergency measures apply to Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, and Guizhou. The Level-IV designation represents the lowest tier within China's four-level emergency response framework.
Weather forecasts indicate that persistent rainfall is expected to affect these regions from Sunday through Tuesday, with some locations likely to experience exceptionally intense downpours.
Officials have warned that rising precipitation could lead to increasing water levels in several rivers. Small and medium-sized waterways in affected areas are considered particularly vulnerable and may exceed flood warning thresholds.
Mountainous and hilly regions are also facing elevated risks, including flash floods and rapidly developing torrents triggered by heavy rainfall.
In response to the forecast, the Ministry of Water Resources issued directives to local water management agencies and river basin authorities, urging them to strengthen monitoring efforts and implement preventive measures aimed at reducing flood-related risks.
The emergency response is part of broader efforts to prepare for potential flooding and safeguard communities as severe weather conditions are expected to persist across large areas of southern and southwestern China, according to reports.
